Querying DNS Records with DIG (Domain Information Groper) #

dig is a powerful command-line tool used by network administrators and webmasters to query Domain Name System (DNS) servers and verify DNS record propagation, TTL values, and name server responses.

Basic Syntax: #

dig [options] domain.com [record_type]

1. Common DIG Command Examples: #

  • Query Standard A Record:
    dig example.com
  • Query Specific Record Types (MX, TXT, CNAME, NS, SOA):
    dig example.com MX
    dig example.com TXT
    dig example.com NS
  • Query a Specific DNS Server (e.g., Google 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare 1.1.1.1):
    dig @8.8.8.8 example.com
  • Short Clean Output (Returns only the IP):
    dig +short example.com
  • Trace Full DNS Delegation Path from Root:
    dig +trace example.com

Tip: dig +trace is especially useful when verifying newly configured Tarweig nameservers, as it inspects the exact delegation from root and TLD servers down to your authoritative zone.
