# How to Use FileZilla With SFTP

🌐This guide is also available in Arabic[← اقرأ بالعربية](https://kb.tarweig.com/docs/%d9%83%d9%8a%d9%81%d9%8a%d8%a9-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%a7%d8%aa%d8%b5%d8%a7%d9%84-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%a2%d9%85%d9%86-%d9%88%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%b4%d9%81%d8%b1-%d8%a8%d8%a8%d8%b1%d9%88%d8%aa%d9%88%d9%83%d9%88/)

The first thing you will need is an [FTP](https://kb.tarweig.com/en/docs/what-is-ftp/) client. This is a program that allows you to connect to a host server’s FTP connection. You can choose to use different FTP clients but they will all operate almost the same, but we recommend **FileZilla**.

Follow these steps to establish an **SFTP** connection to your hosting account with FileZilla (make sure to get the “client” version):

**1)** Download and install [FileZilla](https://filezilla-project.org/) on your computer.

**2)** From your **cPanel** account [**generate a new SSH key**](https://kb.tarweig.com/en/docs/generate-ssh-key/) pair and download the private key to your computer in the .ppk format.

**3)** Open **Filezilla**and click the **Edit** button from the menu then select **Settings**.

**4)** From the Settings window click on **SFTP**tab.

**5)** Next click on **“Add Keyfile”** and select the [private key](https://kb.tarweig.com/en/docs/generate-ssh-key/) you generated within cPanel. You will be prompted to convert the file to a supported but unprotected format (no password), confirm it by clicking the **Yes** button and type your password.

You will be asked to store the key in the putty format, save it on your computer to continue.

**6)** Use the following login information to connect to your server via SFTP:

**FTP Server:** enter  sftp:// followed by your domain name or the main IP of the server you are hosted on, for example sftp://domain.com
**FTP Username:** cPanel username (main FTP username)
 **FTP Password:** username password
**FTP Port: 1988** ( which is the default SSH port for the Tarweig’s servers)

During your first connection, you’ll be asked to store the server’s fingerprint. Click the “**OK” **button to continue connecting and tick the “**Always trust this host, add this key to cache**” checkbox if you plan to connect to the same server again.

Please note that you can only connect to your hosting account via SFTP with the main FTP username and you can not connect with an additional FTP account that you have created via your **cPanel -> FTP Accounts**.
